While Metroidvania and Soulslike genres often blur into each other, The Last Faith emerges as a standout title. This game is more than a nod to its inspirations — it’s a unique, gothic adventure that weaves a captivating tapestry of combat, exploration, and storytelling, not to mention great platforming mechanics.

Combat in the Shadows: Exhilarating and Brutal

The combat system in The Last Faith is its crowning glory. Playing as Eryk, you’re thrown into a brutal world where every encounter feels significant and thrilling. The game offers a diverse arsenal, ranging from melee weapons to arcane spells and firearms.

This variety allows for a deeply customizable combat experience. The fluidity of animations adds to the thrill, making each battle feel like a deadly dance. Boss battles elevate this experience further, presenting challenging foes that require strategy and skill to defeat, as well as plenty of frustrations in doing so (in a good way).

A Visual and Auditory Gothic Masterpiece

Visually, The Last Faith is a darkly beautiful game. The pixel-art style is meticulously crafted, with each environment brimming with gothic details that make Mythringal’s world feel alive yet haunting. The audio complements the visuals perfectly, with a soundtrack that enhances the eerie, foreboding atmosphere of the game.

The narrative of The Last Faith is as mysterious as its protagonist, Eryk. While the game excels in creating an intriguing world, the storytelling sometimes feels underdeveloped. The plot, centered around Eryk’s quest in a world corrupted by the gods and clergy, left me yearning for a deeper exploration of its themes and greater universe. The game’s NPCs add flavor to the world, though their dialogues often serve more as atmospheric world-building than substantive narrative development.

Navigating the Unknown: Exploration and Challenge

Exploration is a key element of The Last Faith. The game encourages players to uncover its secrets, rewarding curiosity with hidden areas and multiple endings.

However, this exploration can sometimes feel aimless, with the game offering little guidance. Resource management adds another layer of strategy, though the system of purchasing health and ammo packs can feel a bit cumbersome.

A Darkly Rewarding Journey

The Last Faith is a remarkable title in the indie gaming scene. It masterfully combines elements of the Soulsborne and Metroidvania genres, creating an experience that is both familiar and fresh. The game’s strengths lie in its combat, visual artistry, and the ability to create an immersive gothic world. While it has its flaws, particularly in narrative depth and exploration guidance, these do not at all detract from the overall experience.

For fans of the genre, The Last Faith is a must-play, offering a challenging yet rewarding journey through a beautifully dark world. It stands as a nod to the creativity and passion of developer Kumi Souls Games, showcasing what indie games can achieve with a clear vision and dedication.
