“What in the holy hell….”
That was what I said out loud (amongst other more expletive words and statements) when I first witnessed the trailer for Scorn.
Developed by Ebb Software, Scorn is touted as an “intensely atmospheric” and “unsettling first-person horror game” and, frankly, that seems to be like a gross oversimplification. I feel like the early footage is far beyond the level of being “unsettling”… and honestly, I’m not even sure a word exists to describe the nature of Scorn based on what we have seen so far.
Scorn will put players within a nightmarish underworld in which the environment itself is just as alive as the grotesque creatures that inhabit the world. Non-linear gameplay
will take players through various rooms with puzzles to solve and stories to tell as they try to make sense of the world that they are in.
The game will be an exclusive Xbox Series X title during the next-gen console’s launch period, with a brand-new trailer having been revealed during May’s Xbox 20/20.
Scorn’s Game Director, Ljubomir Peklar, expressed excitement in the studio’s partnership with Microsoft, as well as the next-gen hardware that allowed them to create such a graphically-demanding horror title.
“For us as developers, it’s imperative to present Scorn in the best way possible. The distinctive art style is only half the story – the other half is having all the technical parts of the game running smoothly. That’s where our partnership with Microsoft and their next-generation Xbox Series X console comes in. Xbox Series X is an extremely capable piece of hardware that will enable us to run Scorn at 4K 60fps with all the graphical bells and whistles. Ease of development and raw processing power are the primary reasons we chose to go exclusively with Xbox Series X. Players on Series X will experience an uncompromising version of Scorn.”
Scorn certainly looks… unique, with a shock factor that seems to be just as scary and unsettling. Seriously,though… that thing in the trailer that extends out from the wall and drips some kind of fluid? WTF.
