Left 4 Dead 2’s “The Last Stand” update may have gone live last month, but what better time to mow down hordes of the undead than during October? Even though it’s not necessarily the Left 4 Dead game that fans were wanting, The Last Stand update will keep you plenty busy during October’s 31 Days of Halloween.
The Last Stand update comes as the first update to occur in eight years for the (*sob) most recent release in the Left for Dead series. However, it’s coming our way thanks to an incredibly dedicated and talented community of fans, which actually began last year, with a Left 4 Dead community member reaching out to Valve about the possibility of celebrating the 10th anniversary of Left 4 Dead 2 with some sort of update.
According to an interview conducted by IGN, the team at Valve was too busy working on the now critically-acclaimed VR title, Half-Life: Alyx, and just couldn’t swing the resources necessary for some sort of Left 4 Dead 2 update. However, Valve was intrigued by the idea of the community creating something themselves.
In the interview, Left 4 Dead community member, Rayman1103, said that the original plan for the celebratory update was notably modest compared to what is actually included in the update:“What was originally planned was just a port of the Survival Maps from Left 4 Dead 1 over into Left 4 Dead 2, all the missing maps that were never ported over… Just to get whatever was missing and get it into [Left 4 Dead 2].”
The updated that players received included much more than that, such as the full “The Last Stand” campaign, additional Survival and Scavenge maps, new weapons, as well as new character animations and voice lines that went unused in the original game. The tone of the game was also meant to be more like the first Left 4 Dead, which had a darker, less campy kind of tone.
We may not be able to go out to Halloween parties in person this year, but Left 4 Dead 2’s The Last Stand update provides plenty of reason to stay inside while playing… er, surviving, online with friends.
Left 4 Dead 2’s “The Last Stand” update is available now on Steam.
